Formed 1981 · Los Angeles, California · Glam Metal / Hard Rock

Mötley Crüe are the world's most notorious rock band — four survivors from the Sunset Strip who built an empire of excess, anthems, and improbable longevity. From self-releasing records out of the back of vans in 1981 to number one albums and stadium tours four decades later, the band's story is one of rock's most extreme and most compelling. Over 100 million records sold. Nine studio albums. One cessation agreement they famously tore up. This is the complete guide.

Who Are Mötley Crüe?

Mötley Crüe are an American rock band formed in Los Angeles, California in January 1981, assembled by bassist Nikki Sixx from the Sunset Strip's bar-band circuit. The band's lineup — Sixx on bass, Mick Mars on guitar, Tommy Lee on drums, and Vince Neil on vocals — remained virtually unchanged for their entire career, a rare feat for a band whose personal lives were defined by chaos. Their sound combined heavy, distorted riffs with an instinct for melody and theatricality that few of their contemporaries could match.

Mötley Crüe self-released their debut album Too Fast for Love on Leathür Records in 1981, selling copies from the back of vans before Elektra Records picked them up in 1982. Their commercial peak came with Dr. Feelgood (1989), produced by Bob Rock, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and went 6× Platinum in the United States. Over a career spanning more than four decades, the band have sold over 100 million records worldwide and remain one of the best-selling rock acts of all time.

Personal Tragedy & Legacy

In December 1984, Vince Neil was driving drunk when his car collided with an oncoming vehicle. Hanoi Rocks drummer Nicholas "Razzle" Dingley was killed, and two others suffered permanent injuries. Neil was convicted of vehicular manslaughter and served 15 days in jail. The incident remains one of rock's most publicised tragedies involving driving under the influence.

Nikki Sixx's heroin overdose on December 23, 1986 — during which he was clinically dead for approximately two minutes before being revived — became the basis for "Kickstart My Heart" and has since been widely cited in discussions about addiction and survival. All four members have spoken publicly about addiction struggles across multiple decades.

New to Mötley Crüe?

Start with Kickstart My Heart — the definitive Crüe track and still the best entry point. Then Dr. Feelgood (1989) as a full album, the band's commercial peak and the strongest record in the catalogue.

Band Members

VN
Vince Neil
Vocals · 1981–1992, 1997–present
The band's frontman and the voice behind their biggest anthems. His upper register and melodic instincts were central to Mötley Crüe's commercial appeal across their peak years. Departed in 1992 amid tensions, rejoined in 1997 for the reunion.
MM
Mick Mars
Guitar · 1981–2022 (retired)
Founding guitarist and consistently the most underrated member. His riffing provided a darker, heavier foundation than most of their Sunset Strip contemporaries, particularly on Shout at the Devil and Girls, Girls, Girls. Retired in 2022 due to ankylosing spondylitis.
NS
Nikki Sixx
Bass · Songwriter · 1981–present
The band's primary songwriter and creative driving force. Wrote or co-wrote the majority of the catalogue, drawing directly from personal experience — most famously his 1986 overdose, which became "Kickstart My Heart." Co-author of the band's bestselling memoir The Dirt.
TL
Tommy Lee
Drums · 1981–present
One of rock's most recognisable drummers, known for his power, showmanship, and the iconic drum kit roller-coaster that became a fixture of Mötley Crüe live shows. The opening fill on "Kickstart My Heart" remains one of rock's most instantly identifiable moments.
