Founded 2000 · Los Angeles, California · Glam Metal / Comedy Rock

Steel Panther are the most joyfully shameless band in modern rock — a Los Angeles outfit that emerged from the Sunset Strip cover band circuit with the audacious goal of bringing 1980s glam metal back, minus the self-seriousness and with maximum comedy intact. Genuinely accomplished musicians playing songs about topics so absurd they wrap back around to loveable, Steel Panther have built a devoted worldwide fanbase through sheer commitment to the bit. This is the complete guide.

Who Are Steel Panther?

Steel Panther are an American rock band formed in Los Angeles, California in 2000, originally performing under the name Metal Skool as a cover band on the Sunset Strip before transitioning to original material and adopting their current name in 2008. The band's entire creative identity centres on a loving, extremely committed parody of 1980s glam metal — the big hair, the spandex, the pyro, the power ballads and especially the lyrical subject matter — delivered by musicians who are genuinely accomplished enough to pull it off convincingly.

The joke, such as it is, only works because the music is actually good. Guitarist Satchel is widely regarded as a genuinely exceptional technical player, vocalist Michael Starr has real range and control, and the band writes hooks that would have been legitimate radio hits in 1986. That combination of musical credibility and complete comedic commitment has earned Steel Panther a devoted worldwide fanbase and a reputation as one of the most entertaining live acts in rock.

Real Musicians, Ridiculous Songs

Steel Panther's comedy only works because the music underneath it is genuinely great. Guitarist Satchel is widely regarded as one of the most technically accomplished rock guitarists working today, and the band writes hooks and power ballads that would sit comfortably alongside the actual 1980s glam metal they're lampooning. The songs are funny, but they're also legitimately good songs.

The Steel Panther Sound

Steel Panther's sound is a loving, technically accomplished recreation of 1980s Sunset Strip glam metal — big guitar solos, soaring vocal melodies, arena-ready choruses and power ballads — delivered with complete comedic commitment and absolutely no self-seriousness whatsoever. The band's musical quality is the key ingredient that elevates them above mere novelty: guitarist Satchel is a genuinely exceptional player, and the songwriting is strong enough to function independently of the comedy.
