About Ghost

Ghost were created by Swedish musician Tobias Forge in Linköping in 2006. The idea was unusual from the start: a band that used the language of heavy metal and Satanic horror, but wrapped it around clean melodies, classic-rock hooks and a full fictional church mythology. On stage, Forge performed behind papal characters while the backing musicians appeared as anonymous Nameless Ghouls.

The early years were built on mystery. Opus Eponymous introduced the first Papa Emeritus and the band’s retro occult sound, drawing from early metal, doom, psych rock and 1970s horror atmosphere. Songs like Ritual and Elizabeth became underground favourites because Ghost sounded both familiar and strange: heavy enough for metal fans, but catchy enough to unsettle people who expected something more extreme.

Ghost’s rise accelerated with Infestissumam, Meliora and the Popestar EP. Cirice brought Grammy recognition, while Square Hammer became the band’s perfect arena-rock breakthrough: occult lyrics, a gigantic chorus and a riff that felt instantly classic. Prequelle then pushed Ghost further into theatrical pop-metal with Rats and Dance Macabre.

By the Impera era, Ghost had become a major arena act. The viral success of Mary on a Cross introduced them to a huge new audience, while the band’s chapters, character changes and live rituals turned each album cycle into an event. In 2025, Ghost entered the Papa V Perpetua era with Skeletá, continuing Forge’s blend of horror theatre, classic pop craft and modern hard-rock scale.

Top 10 Ghost Songs

Ranked by songwriting craft, live impact, fan legacy, cultural reach and how well each track captures Ghost’s balance of darkness and melody.

01
Square Hammer
Popestar
The perfect Ghost song: occult, catchy, theatrical and direct. Square Hammer turned the band’s retro-metal instincts into a huge rock anthem, with a chorus that works as both ritual chant and festival singalong. It remains the clearest gateway into Ghost’s appeal.
2016
02
Cirice
Meliora
A slow-burning centrepiece that helped push Ghost to another level. Cirice combines menace, melody and emotional intimacy, proving the band could sound heavy without losing the theatrical grandeur. Its Grammy win made it a major milestone in Ghost’s rise.
2015
03
Mary on a Cross
Seven Inches of Satanic Panic
Originally a retro-styled standalone single, Mary on a Cross later became Ghost’s biggest streaming moment after exploding on social platforms. Its warm melody and 1960s pop-rock feel showed how far Ghost could travel beyond traditional metal audiences.
2019
04
Year Zero
Infestissumam
One of Ghost’s most theatrical and openly blasphemous anthems. Year Zero works because it treats horror imagery with full dramatic commitment, building a chorus that feels like a dark procession rather than a normal rock hook.
2013
05
Dance Macabre
Prequelle
Ghost at their most disco-rock and pop-accessible. Dance Macabre is bright, catchy and almost playful, but the plague-era atmosphere of Prequelle gives it a darker undertone. It is one of Forge’s sharpest pure pop choruses.
2018
06
Rats
Prequelle
A punchy, theatrical hard-rock single that introduced the Cardinal Copia era. Rats has the swagger of a classic metal single but the melodrama of a stage musical, making it one of Ghost’s most effective live songs.
2018
07
Ritual
Opus Eponymous
The early Ghost blueprint. Ritual has the dusty occult-rock atmosphere of the debut, but the chorus already shows Forge’s melodic instincts. It remains one of the best examples of the band’s original underground sound.
2010
08
He Is
Meliora
A softer, hymn-like Ghost song that flips religious language into something eerie and beautiful. He Is shows how effective the band can be when they move away from riffs and let atmosphere, melody and devotional imagery carry the song.
2015
09
Call Me Little Sunshine
Impera
A dark, polished highlight from Impera. Call Me Little Sunshine leans into groove and atmosphere rather than speed, giving Ghost a modern rock single that still feels ritualistic and unmistakably theirs.
2022
10
Satanized
Skeletá
A key track from the Papa V Perpetua era. Satanized keeps Ghost’s melodic hard-rock signature intact while pushing the Skeletá era forward with sharp theatrical energy. It feels like Ghost returning to their core language with renewed confidence.
