About Bon Jovi

Bon Jovi formed in Sayreville, New Jersey in 1983, led by singer Jon Bon Jovi and built around a classic core that included keyboardist David Bryan, drummer Tico Torres, guitarist Richie Sambora and bassist Alec John Such. They arrived at the moment when hard rock, glam metal and MTV were colliding, but what made Bon Jovi different was how direct the songs felt. They were not just chasing flash; they were writing giant choruses about escape, work, love, survival and holding on.

The breakthrough came with Slippery When Wet in 1986. You Give Love a Bad Name, Livin’ on a Prayer and Wanted Dead or Alive turned the band into global stars. The album’s success was not an accident: Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora had a powerful writing partnership, Desmond Child helped sharpen the hooks, and the band understood how to make rock songs that sounded enormous without losing their everyday emotional language.

New Jersey proved the band could sustain the scale, while Keep the Faith and These Days showed a more mature 1990s version of Bon Jovi. They survived the collapse of the glam-metal era by leaning into rootsier songwriting, adult themes and a more grounded image. Then Crush gave them a second mainstream life in 2000 with It’s My Life, a song that introduced Bon Jovi to a new generation.

The later years brought major change. Alec John Such left in the 1990s, Hugh McDonald became the band’s long-term bassist, and Richie Sambora left in 2013. Phil X stepped into the lead guitar role, while John Shanks and Everett Bradley became part of the modern line-up. Jon Bon Jovi’s vocal health became a central part of the band’s recent story, documented in Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story, but Forever returned the band to a message of resilience, gratitude and joy.

Top 10 Bon Jovi Songs

Ranked by songwriting craft, cultural impact, live legacy and how well each track represents a key Bon Jovi era.

01
Livin’ on a Prayer
Slippery When Wet
Livin’ on a Prayer is Bon Jovi’s defining song and one of the most recognisable rock anthems ever recorded. The talk box riff, Tommy and Gina storyline, key change and impossible chorus all work together like a stadium-rock machine. It is both huge and strangely personal — a song about struggle that feels like victory.
1986
02
Wanted Dead or Alive
Slippery When Wet
The acoustic opening instantly gives Bon Jovi a mythic, outlaw feel. Wanted Dead or Alive turns touring life into cowboy imagery, with Richie Sambora’s guitar work and harmonies giving the song its widescreen power. It is the band’s greatest proof that they could do more than glossy party rock.
1986
03
You Give Love a Bad Name
Slippery When Wet
“Shot through the heart” is one of the great opening lines in 80s rock. You Give Love a Bad Name is lean, explosive and built entirely around maximum hook impact. It was the song that truly launched Slippery When Wet into the stratosphere and set the template for Bon Jovi’s pop-metal dominance.
1986
04
It’s My Life
Crush
The great comeback single. It’s My Life updated the Bon Jovi formula for 2000 without losing the band’s core identity: huge chorus, talk box guitar, working-class defiance and a lyric built for mass singalongs. It also brought Tommy and Gina back into the story, linking the new era to Livin’ on a Prayer.
2000
05
Always
Cross Road
Bon Jovi’s biggest power ballad and one of Jon Bon Jovi’s most dramatic vocal performances. Always is pure 90s heartbreak theatre: big strings, bigger emotions and a chorus designed to be sung at full volume. It proved the band could dominate outside the 80s hard-rock moment.
1994
06
Bad Medicine
New Jersey
Loud, playful and built for arenas, Bad Medicine catches Bon Jovi at peak late-80s confidence. The song is not subtle, but subtlety was never the point. The chorus is enormous, the band sound fully in control, and the track helped prove New Jersey could follow Slippery When Wet without collapsing under the pressure.
1988
07
Keep the Faith
Keep the Faith
Keep the Faith is where Bon Jovi entered the 90s with a tougher, more mature sound. The bass-led groove, big chorus and socially conscious edge helped distance the band from the dying glam-metal image. It was a necessary reinvention and one of their strongest post-80s singles.
1992
08
Runaway
Bon Jovi
Runaway is the song that opened the door. Before the stadium years, before Slippery When Wet, this track gave Jon Bon Jovi his first real taste of radio attention. It sounds more new wave and early-80s than the later hits, but the melodic ambition is already there.
1984
09
Bed of Roses
Keep the Faith
A sweeping ballad from the more reflective 90s era. Bed of Roses is less bombastic than Always but more personal, with Jon Bon Jovi writing from the road about loneliness, temptation and longing. It remains one of the band’s most durable slow songs.
1992
10
Legendary
Forever
Legendary is the clearest gateway into the modern Bon Jovi era. It is not trying to outmuscle the 80s classics; instead, it leans into gratitude, survival and a lighter sense of celebration after Jon Bon Jovi’s vocal struggles. It works as a statement of resilience rather than nostalgia.
