The ProdigyBand Guide
Formed 1990 · Braintree, Essex · Electronic / Big Beat / Industrial / Rave
The Prodigy are one of the most important electronic acts in history and one of the few to successfully bridge the worlds of rave culture and stadium rock without compromising either. Founded by Liam Howlett in Braintree, Essex in 1990, the band evolved from rave-circuit pioneers to globally dominant forces with The Fat of the Land (1997) — an album that debuted at number one in 22 countries and contained two of the most viscerally effective singles of the decade. Keith Flint's mohawked visual presence and feral stage energy gave the band a rock star persona that no electronic act had previously claimed. This is the complete guide.
Who Are The Prodigy?
The Prodigy are a British electronic band formed in Braintree, Essex in 1990 by Liam Howlett. The classic lineup that produced the band's most celebrated work consisted of Howlett as the creative mastermind and producer, Keith Flint and Maxim as vocalists and performers, and Leeroy Thornton as a dancer in the early years. Howlett is the sole composer and producer — every Prodigy track is written and produced by him — while Flint and Maxim provided the vocal performances and visual identity that made the band's live shows and videos among the most striking of their era.
The band emerged from the UK rave circuit in the early 1990s, initially producing instrumental breakbeat hardcore and rave music before progressively incorporating rock and industrial influences across their second and third albums. Music for the Jilted Generation (1994) was the first album to demonstrate the band's capacity for something more menacing and substantial than rave euphoria. The Fat of the Land (1997) completed the transformation — a record that was simultaneously one of the most successful electronic albums ever made and one that sounded like nothing else in any genre.
Keith Flint was not just The Prodigy's vocalist — he was the band's visual and cultural lightning rod. The mohawked, tattooed, safety-pin-faced appearance that defined the "Firestarter" era created one of the most iconic frontman images in 1990s British culture. Flint began as a dancer with the band before developing his role as a vocalist from Music for the Jilted Generation onward.
Keith Flint died on March 4, 2019, at the age of 49. He was found at his home in North End, Dunmow, Essex. His death was ruled a suicide. Howlett announced shortly after that The Prodigy would continue — that stopping would be wrong — and the band have continued to record and perform with Maxim as the primary vocal presence. Their album Timebomb Zone was released in 2024.
Start with "Firestarter" — the most famous and immediately accessible track. Then The Fat of the Land (1997) as a full album — the commercial and creative peak. Music for the Jilted Generation (1994) is the essential companion for the darker, more menacing earlier sound.
