StaindBand Guide

Founded 1995 · Springfield, Massachusetts · Post-Grunge / Nu Metal

Staind began as one of the darkest, most aggressive bands to emerge from the late-90s nu metal wave and ended the decade that followed as the writers of one of the most enduring acoustic ballads of the 2000s — a transformation that makes them one of the more interesting genre trajectories of their era. Aaron Lewis's raw, confrontational voice anchors a catalogue that moves from genuine heaviness to plainspoken vulnerability without ever feeling like two different bands. This is the complete guide.

Who Are Staind?

Staind are a rock band formed in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1995 by vocalist Aaron Lewis and guitarist Mike Mushok. They emerged from the late-90s nu metal scene with a sound that was notably darker and more confrontational than many of their contemporaries, before pivoting toward a more melodic, post-grunge-leaning direction that produced their biggest commercial successes in the early-to-mid 2000s.

Aaron Lewis's voice is the band's defining instrument — a raw, often anguished delivery capable of moving between aggressive nu metal intensity and stripped-down, almost confessional vulnerability within the same album. The band's breakthrough single It's Been Awhile demonstrated that range in a single song, becoming one of the most ubiquitous rock radio singles of 2001 and reshaping the commercial trajectory of the band for the rest of their career.

From Fred Durst's Basement Tapes to Rock Radio

Staind's early demo recordings caught the attention of Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst, who became an early champion of the band and helped secure them a deal with Flip/Elektra Records. Durst's support, including bringing the band onto high-profile tours and even appearing on their early material, was a significant factor in the band's initial visibility before they outgrew the nu metal association that helped launch them.

New to Staind?

Start with It's Been Awhile — the song that made them, still the best entry point. Then Break the Cycle (2001) as a full album for the strongest and most complete record in the catalogue.

Aaron Lewis

Born 13 May 1972, Worcester, Massachusetts. Founder and the band's defining vocal presence — a raw, emotionally direct delivery capable of moving between aggressive intensity and stripped-down vulnerability, often within the same song. Has also pursued a successful solo country music career since the mid-2010s, a genre shift that surprised some longtime rock fans but built naturally on the confessional, plainspoken quality already present in his Staind lyrics.

Band History

1995
Staind form in Springfield, Massachusetts, with Aaron Lewis and Mike Mushok at the core. The early sound is heavier and more nu metal-aligned than what the band would later become known for, drawing comparisons to contemporaries in the downtuned, aggressive style popular at the time.
1996
Debut album Tormented released independently. Raw and significantly heavier than the band's later, more melodic work, it establishes the band locally before catching the attention of Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst.
1999
Dysfunction released following Fred Durst's championing of the band and a deal with Flip/Elektra Records. Contains Mudshovel, a dark, heavy single that establishes the band on mainstream rock and nu metal radio. Durst's endorsement gives the band crucial early visibility.
2001
Break the Cycle released — the commercial and creative peak. Contains It's Been Awhile, Fade and Outside. It's Been Awhile becomes one of the most-played rock radio songs of the year and demonstrates a more melodic, accessible side of the band that significantly broadens their audience beyond the nu metal scene that launched them. The album sells over 4 million copies in the US.
2003
14 Shades of Grey released. Contains So Far Away. Continues the more melodic, post-grunge-leaning direction established on Break the Cycle, consolidating the band's commercial pivot away from their heavier nu metal roots.
2005–2011
Chapter V (2005) and The Illusion of Progress (2008) continue the band's commercially successful run, with Right Here becoming another significant radio hit. Staind (2011), the band's seventh and final studio album to date, marks a return to a heavier sound reminiscent of the band's earlier material.
2012–present
The band goes on hiatus as Aaron Lewis pursues a successful solo country music career. Staind reunite periodically for touring, and Lewis has spoken about the band's legacy and the natural creative overlap between his confessional Staind lyrics and his later country songwriting.

The Staind Sound

Staind's sound moved across their career from heavily downtuned, aggressive nu metal in the late 90s toward a more melodic, accessible post-grunge style by the early 2000s, without ever fully abandoning the darker, more confrontational instincts that defined their earliest material. Aaron Lewis's vocal delivery is the connecting thread across both eras — raw and emotionally direct whether the song calls for aggression or vulnerability, which is part of why songs like It's Been Awhile can move between a stripped-down acoustic verse and an explosive, distorted chorus without feeling like a contradiction.
