About Nirvana

Nirvana formed in Aberdeen, Washington in 1987, built around Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic before settling into their classic line-up with Dave Grohl on drums. Their early sound came from punk, sludge, hardcore, classic pop and the underground noise of the Pacific Northwest. Cobain wanted songs that were catchy and damaged at the same time — melodies that could be hummed, then torn apart by distortion.

The debut album Bleach arrived through Sub Pop in 1989. It was heavy, grimy and much closer to the underground than the world-changing sound that followed, but tracks like About a Girl, School and Negative Creep already showed the split at the centre of Nirvana: Beatles-shaped melody trapped inside abrasive punk rock.

Nevermind changed everything in 1991. Smells Like Teen Spirit turned the band into unwilling spokespeople for a generation, but the album’s power runs deeper than one song. Come as You Are, Lithium, Drain You and In Bloom proved Nirvana could write songs that were accessible, strange, angry and emotionally exposed all at once.

The follow-up, In Utero, deliberately pushed back against clean commercial expectations. Produced by Steve Albini, it was rawer, more abrasive and more uncomfortable, but also contained some of Cobain’s most beautiful writing in Heart-Shaped Box, All Apologies and Dumb. Kurt Cobain died in April 1994, ending Nirvana after only three studio albums, but their influence on rock, alternative music, punk and pop culture remains enormous.

Top 10 Nirvana Songs

Ranked by songwriting craft, cultural impact, live legacy and how well each track represents a key Nirvana era.

01
Smells Like Teen Spirit
Nevermind
The song that changed the direction of mainstream rock. Smells Like Teen Spirit took punk dynamics, a huge chorus and a deliberately blurry lyric and somehow became a global anthem. It remains unavoidable because it still sounds like a door being kicked open.
1991
02
Come as You Are
Nevermind
Built around one of Nirvana’s most recognisable guitar lines, Come as You Are is eerie, inviting and contradictory. The song’s power comes from how relaxed it seems on the surface while carrying a darker uncertainty underneath.
1991
03
Heart-Shaped Box
In Utero
Heart-Shaped Box is Nirvana at their most disturbing and cinematic. The verses crawl, the chorus explodes, and Cobain’s imagery feels both personal and surreal. It proved In Utero could be abrasive without losing the band’s gift for unforgettable hooks.
1993
04
Lithium
Nevermind
Few songs show Nirvana’s quiet-loud formula better. Lithium is controlled, tense and then suddenly unhinged, with Cobain turning alienation into something strangely communal. The “yeah” hook is simple, but it feels like an emotional collapse.
1991
05
All Apologies
In Utero
One of Cobain’s most beautiful songs. All Apologies feels exhausted, graceful and deeply sad, especially in its famous MTV Unplugged version. It shows Nirvana’s softer side without smoothing away the damage.
1993
06
Drain You
Nevermind
A fan favourite and one of Cobain’s strongest pop-punk compositions. Drain You has a perfect chorus, a strange noisy middle section and a melody strong enough to compete with the biggest singles on Nevermind.
1991
07
About a Girl
Bleach
The first clear sign that Cobain could write classic pop melodies beneath the distortion. About a Girl sits awkwardly beside the heavier material on Bleach, which is exactly why it matters so much.
1989
08
In Bloom
Nevermind
In Bloom is both a massive rock song and a joke about people missing the point of massive rock songs. The chorus is huge, Grohl’s drumming is explosive, and the lyric captures Cobain’s discomfort with parts of the audience Nirvana had started attracting.
1991
09
Breed
Nevermind
Breed is pure velocity. It is one of the fastest and most direct tracks on Nevermind, driven by Grohl’s drums and a riff that feels ready to fall apart. It captures Nirvana’s punk heart better than almost anything else on the album.
1991
10
Where Did You Sleep Last Night
MTV Unplugged in New York
Nirvana’s version of this traditional song became one of the most powerful performances of the band’s final chapter. Cobain’s last vocal break is raw, exposed and unforgettable. It is not a studio single, but it is essential Nirvana.
1994
