Eagles
The Eagles turned California country rock into stadium-sized classic rock, pairing immaculate harmonies with songs about freedom, heartbreak, excess and disillusion. From Take It Easy and Desperado to Hotel California, they became one of the best-selling bands in music history.
About Eagles
The Eagles formed in Los Angeles in 1971 after Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner worked around the same Southern California scene. Frey and Henley had played with Linda Ronstadt, and the group quickly developed a sound that sat between country, folk, rock and West Coast harmony music. They were never just a country rock band, but that clean acoustic feel gave their early songs a warmth that separated them from heavier 1970s rock acts.
Their self-titled debut introduced Take It Easy, Witchy Woman and Peaceful Easy Feeling, songs that established the easygoing but carefully crafted Eagles sound. Desperado followed in 1973 as a loose outlaw-themed concept album, and while it was not initially a huge commercial smash, its title track became one of the band’s most enduring songs. By On the Border and One of These Nights, the Eagles were moving toward a harder, bigger rock sound.
The arrival of Don Felder and later Joe Walsh helped transform the band from polished country rock into one of the most dominant classic rock groups of the 1970s. Hotel California in 1976 became their masterpiece: darker, sharper and more cynical than their early work. Its title track, New Kid in Town and Life in the Fast Lane captured the glamour and emptiness of fame in a way that still defines the band’s legacy.
Internal tension, perfectionism and exhaustion eventually led to the Eagles splitting in 1980 after The Long Run. Their 1994 reunion, Hell Freezes Over, turned them into one of the most successful touring acts of the modern era. Glenn Frey’s death in 2016 changed the band permanently, but Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit continued with Vince Gill and Deacon Frey, keeping the Eagles’ songbook alive for new audiences.
