About Eagles

The Eagles formed in Los Angeles in 1971 after Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner worked around the same Southern California scene. Frey and Henley had played with Linda Ronstadt, and the group quickly developed a sound that sat between country, folk, rock and West Coast harmony music. They were never just a country rock band, but that clean acoustic feel gave their early songs a warmth that separated them from heavier 1970s rock acts.

Their self-titled debut introduced Take It Easy, Witchy Woman and Peaceful Easy Feeling, songs that established the easygoing but carefully crafted Eagles sound. Desperado followed in 1973 as a loose outlaw-themed concept album, and while it was not initially a huge commercial smash, its title track became one of the band’s most enduring songs. By On the Border and One of These Nights, the Eagles were moving toward a harder, bigger rock sound.

The arrival of Don Felder and later Joe Walsh helped transform the band from polished country rock into one of the most dominant classic rock groups of the 1970s. Hotel California in 1976 became their masterpiece: darker, sharper and more cynical than their early work. Its title track, New Kid in Town and Life in the Fast Lane captured the glamour and emptiness of fame in a way that still defines the band’s legacy.

Internal tension, perfectionism and exhaustion eventually led to the Eagles splitting in 1980 after The Long Run. Their 1994 reunion, Hell Freezes Over, turned them into one of the most successful touring acts of the modern era. Glenn Frey’s death in 2016 changed the band permanently, but Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit continued with Vince Gill and Deacon Frey, keeping the Eagles’ songbook alive for new audiences.

Top 10 Eagles Songs

Ranked by songwriting craft, cultural impact, vocal performance, live legacy and how well each track represents the Eagles story.

01
Hotel California
Hotel California
The Eagles’ defining song and one of the most recognisable classic rock tracks ever recorded. The lyrics are mysterious without being fully explainable, the atmosphere is dark and cinematic, and the closing guitar duel between Don Felder and Joe Walsh is one of rock’s most famous endings.
1976
02
Take It Easy
Eagles
The song that introduced the Eagles to the world. Co-written by Glenn Frey and Jackson Browne, Take It Easy captures the band’s early California sound perfectly: bright harmonies, country-rock rhythm and a chorus that feels like open road.
1972
03
Desperado
Desperado
A piano ballad that became one of Don Henley’s signature vocal performances. Desperado was not released as a single at the time, but it grew into one of the Eagles’ most loved songs because it feels personal, wounded and timeless.
1973
04
Life in the Fast Lane
Hotel California
Joe Walsh’s riff pushed the Eagles into harder rock territory and gave Hotel California one of its most biting moments. The song’s picture of excess, speed and self-destruction is the darker side of the California dream that the band had once made sound so inviting.
1976
05
New Kid in Town
Hotel California
Smooth, elegant and quietly devastating. New Kid in Town works as a love song, but also as a song about the music business and how quickly fame moves on. Glenn Frey’s lead vocal is one of his finest moments.
1976
06
Take It to the Limit
One of These Nights
Randy Meisner’s greatest Eagles vocal performance and one of the band’s biggest emotional peaks. The song builds slowly into a huge final chorus, turning exhaustion, longing and ambition into something grand and deeply human.
1975
07
One of These Nights
One of These Nights
A sleek, darker hit that pushed the Eagles beyond their early country-rock identity. The groove is smooth but unsettling, and Don Henley’s vocal gives the song a restless late-night tension that still feels distinctive.
1975
08
Lyin’ Eyes
One of These Nights
One of the Eagles’ best storytelling songs. Lyin’ Eyes uses country detail and polished harmonies to tell a small, sad story about comfort, compromise and loneliness. It shows the band at their most narrative and melodic.
1975
09
Already Gone
On the Border
A confident, guitar-driven song that marks the Eagles moving toward a tougher rock sound. Already Gone has one of Glenn Frey’s most joyful vocals and remains a perfect breakup anthem.
1974
10
The Long Run
The Long Run
The title track from the band’s final pre-breakup album sounds like a group trying to survive its own success. It is looser and less pristine than the Hotel California era, but its weary confidence makes it an important late-70s Eagles statement.
